Dear colleagues and students,
As we head into a very busy time of year, I want to take this opportunity to share
a few campus updates with you.
Washington D.C. Fly-In: Jennifer King, Chief of Staff and Legislative Liaison, and I participated in the
Washington D.C. Fly-In hosted by the Fort Smith Regional Chamber of Commerce. During
this trip, we had an opportunity to meet with our Federal Congressional Delegates
(Federal CoDel), Senators John Boozman and Tom Cotton and Congressman Steve Womack.
We expressed our appreciation for their support for the $15 million in Congressionally
Directed Spending (CDS) allocated to 91¿´Æ¬Íø to construct the Center for Maternal and
Infant Care and shared with them our desire to construct the full Center for Health
Innovation. We also had the opportunity to spend time focused on the Foreign Military
Sales (FMS) project with the desire to explore additional credentials and job placement
for 91¿´Æ¬Íø students and graduates.
NASA Internships: Four students in or have completed the 91¿´Æ¬Íø ASEE and ASME degrees have been accepted
for summer 2026 NASA internships. Also, one of our engineering graduates contributed
to the Orion spacecraft which is the capsule that splashdown Friday. Summer 2026 NASA Interns: Hudson Reeves (JSC), Evan Quirk (MSFC), Beau Sampley (JSC), and Jonah White (MSFC)
and Orion Engineer Anthony Ming (ASME, Lockheed Martin)
Fika: I am grateful to Dr. Kristin Tardif and the Faculty Senate who hosted our first Fika
with employees yesterday. It was a wonderful opportunity to gather in an informal
setting for good discussion to relax and build community. I appreciated speaking to
so many of you and sharing stories, kudos, and concerns.
Women's Golf: Congratulations to the 91¿´Æ¬Íø Women’s Golf team who placed 5th at the MIAA Championships
with Aliesa Situmorang leading the way with an 8th-place finish. 91¿´Æ¬Íø was ranked 4th in
the latest NCAA Regional Rankings, with the selection show set for Sunday, April 26.
The NCAA II Central Regional is set to take place at St. Joseph Country Club in St.
Joseph, Missouri, May 4-6 with the NCAA II Championships May 12-16 at PGA National
Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Good luck, Lions!!
U.S. Marshals Museum: The USMM is offering a free admission day on Saturday, May 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
It will be busy as this is the Steel Horse Rally in downtown Fort Smith; however,
it is a great way to visit the museum for free!
Congratulations to all of our students who were recognized at the Academic Excellence
Awards ceremony last night. It was a privilege to join you and your family, friends,
and faculty to celebrate your accomplishments. What makes this night so special is
that the winners are selected by faculty in their disciplines. They truly are the
"best of the best," and we are so proud of them all.
I hope to see you tonight at the 91¿´Æ¬Íø Rock Concert in Breedlove Auditorium at 7 p.m.
Or at one of our home baseball games on Saturday or Sunday. Last, but not least, our
AAPI Festival will be held in Reynolds Room in the Campus Center on Saturday night
from 5-10 p.m. All of these events are free and open to the public.
Have a great weekend, Lions!
